Find a familiar folder
- Press Windows + E. Use Documents, Pictures, or Downloads in the navigation area.
- Check the address bar to see where you actually are. A folder under OneDrive is not necessarily the same location as an older local folder.
- Use View to switch between icons and details. Details can make dates, sizes, and file types easier to compare.
Keep useful places close
Right-click a folder and select Pin to Quick access when available. This creates a convenient route back; it does not move the folder. Home and Quick access labels vary by version.
On versions with File Explorer tabs, use the + button or Ctrl + T for another tab. This is handy when comparing folders without piling up windows.
Copy first when the files matter
Copy leaves the original in place. Cut prepares a move. When moving important photos or documents to another drive, copying first gives you a chance to open the copies and confirm they are usable before deleting anything.
Right-click a file to find Cut, Copy, Rename, and other actions. Hover over an unfamiliar icon for its label. Show more options exposes additional commands from supported installed apps.
If a file seems missing
Check the folder path, Windows account, Recycle Bin, and any cloud-sync status before assuming deletion. Do not empty the Recycle Bin or run cleanup while trying to recover a missing file. A shortcut is not a second copy of the original.
