Capture just the useful area
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Choose the capture shape you need.
- Drag around the error or window. Keep the exact error wording visible.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool to review it, mark it up, or save a clearly named copy.
- Before sharing, crop or redact passwords, account numbers, private messages, and other sensitive information.
Other shortcuts to know
- Alt + Print Screen captures the active window for pasting into another app. Some keyboards also require the Fn key.
- Windows + Print Screen saves a full-screen capture, commonly under Pictures > Screenshots. Folder redirection can change the actual location.
- Print Screen by itself may open Snipping Tool or copy a capture, depending on your keyboard and Windows settings.
Find the saved image
Current Snipping Tool versions can save captures automatically. Open its Settings to check the save behavior and folder on your PC. You can still use Save as to choose an explicit location.
If you need a menu that vanishes when you click away, use Snipping Tool’s delay option. Open the menu during the delay.
Add context, not guesses
Along with the image, note which app was open and what you clicked before the error. Never call a support number merely because it appears in a browser warning. Take the screenshot without interacting with the warning.
