Find the space users
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories before selecting cleanup.
- Open Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations and read each category. Leave anything you do not understand unchecked.
- Check Downloads and the Recycle Bin yourself before emptying them. They may contain files you still need.
Use Storage Sense deliberately
Storage Sense can remove temporary items and handle selected cleanup automatically. Review its schedule and deletion rules first. Downloads and cloud-content options deserve particular attention.
Making a OneDrive file online-only frees a local copy; deleting a synced file is a different action and can affect the cloud copy too. Check sync status and backup arrangements before either.
Old Windows files and rollback
Previous-installation and update files can take substantial space. Removing them may remove recovery or rollback options. If a recent upgrade is not behaving properly, do not remove those files merely to tidy up.
Uninstall apps through Settings > Apps rather than manually deleting their program folders. Move personal files only after confirming the destination copy opens.
When cleanup is only a temporary answer
If the drive keeps filling with normal use, capacity may be the issue. A model-compatible storage upgrade or a separate archive may make more sense than repeated emergency cleanup.
If files are missing or the drive is showing errors, stop cleanup and investigate the data problem first. More free space is no consolation if the wrong files paid for it.
