Check what is waiting
- Save your work, connect reliable power, and open Settings > Windows Update.
- Read the status. An update waiting to download, an installation in progress, and a restart required are different stages.
- If a restart is offered, choose a suitable time. Keep important files backed up before major system changes.
Set active hours
Open Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours you usually use the PC. Review restart scheduling options when Windows offers them.
Active hours helps avoid inconvenient restarts. It is not a promise that no update or restart can ever interrupt you. Save work regularly. A temporary pause can help with a short conflict; resume updates afterward.
When an update fails
- Record the error code, update name, and date. Check available storage and whether another restart is already pending.
- Use the Windows Update troubleshooting options in Settings or Get Help.
- If the same update repeatedly fails or the PC will not start, stop repeating forced shutdowns. Protect the files and investigate the exact failure.
Before recovery work
Some repair or firmware changes can trigger device-encryption recovery. Make sure you can access your recovery information before beginning. Never post a recovery key publicly.
Do not assume every fault after an update was caused by it, or that updates cannot cause a real problem. The timing is a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis.
